What Good readers do
Much research has been conducted in order to establish the qualities that good readers possess (Department of Education and Children's Services; Duke & Pearson, 2002; Henderson & Buskist, 2011).

When teaching reading comprehension strategies to students, it is important to keep the characteristics of good readers in mind in order to guide the teaching.
Good readers:
- Are active in their reading
- They read for a purpose
- Monitor their comprehension
- by constantly evaluating achievement of their reading goals
- Look over the text prior to reading, noting the structure
- Seek to uncover gaps in their knowledge
- Adjust their reading strategies as they move through a text
