- anticipating what the text might be about based on the cover and title
- using illustrations to predict what the text is about
- discover whether initial predictions were correct
- make more predictions and continue reading in order to test these predictions
- reviewing predictions made and evaluating how accurate they were
- consider clues that you may have missed as you read along
- discussing ways to further improve your ability to predict
ACTIVITIES TO HELP STUDENTS MAKE PREDICTIONS
Read a section of the text
- Read a part of the text to your students. Get them to write down a sentence prediction on a piece of paper. Stick this on the wall and revisit these predictions once the action in the text has taken place.
- After reviewing the predictions made, discuss whose prediction was the closest and the reason/s why.
Unusual object
- Bring in an assortment of objects that students may not be familiar with.
- Get them to predict what they think the object is and what it could be used for.
- Discuss how they reached these predictions and how accurate their predictions were.
